Abstract
Introduction: Gridhrasi (Sciatica) is one of the most common Vatavyadhi which come across in general practice. According to Charaka Samhita major clinical symptoms of Gridhrasi are pain, stiffness and twitching over lower back (Kati/Prishta), thighs (Sphik/Jangha), knees (Janu) and legs (Pada). It can be presented as either Kevala Vataja or Vata Kaphaja as per Charaka. Vagbhata described the difficulty in raising legs (Sakthyulkshepa Nigrahana) as a cardinal symptom of Gridhrasi. Similarly sciatica is usually presented with radiating type of low back pain and may be associated with neurological deficits. Case report: A 53 yr old male patient with an acute onset of severe low back ache and associated numbness and tingling sensation over the right lower limb was approached in the NARIP outpatient department. On examination he had grade 3 tenderness over lumbosacral region. He also had positive straight leg raising test and lasegue’s test on examination. The patient had been treated with Sodhana & Samana medicines. The complaints of the patient were assessed with VAS, SLR test and walking test. After the treatment he got marked improvement in his conditions. Conclusion:This case report shows that the classical Gridhrasi treatment with Snehapana, Vamana and Vasti along with Samana medicines is very effective in sciatica.

Key words: Gridhrasi, Sciatica, Snehapana Vamana, Vasti
