ACORUS CALAMUS – A LIPID LOWERING AGENT

Abstract
The hypocholesterolaemic effects of Acorua calamus Linn. (3 mg/kg/day), a traditional Ayurvedic preparation, were compared with clofibrate (33 mg/kg/day) in albino fed on high cholesterol, high fat diet for sixteen weeks. The drug was found to be as effective as clofibrate in, lowering serum cholesterol, serum triglycerides, plasma fibrinogen and increasing fibrinolytic activity.
