CHEMICAL CONSTITUENTS OF NELUMBO SPECIOSA

Abstract
Nelumbo speciosa (Nympheaceae) is a handsome aquatic herb with stout erect rhizome found throughout India. The filaments of the plant are astringent having a cooling effect and is prescribed in the burning of body, bleeding piles and menorrhagia. No work has so far been reported on the chemical constituents of Nelumbo speciosa while both alkaloidal and Non-alkaloidal constituents have been reported from N. nucifera and N. lutae. Petrol and alcoholic extracts of Nelumbo speciosa on repeated chromatography over silica gel yielded three alkaloids NSA-1 mp-195-60 characterised as, 1-methoxy 2-hydroxy aporphine, NSA-2, mp-162-30 characterized as 1, 2, dimethoxy aporphine NSA-3 mp-100-10, characterized as 1, 2, methylenedioxy aporphine besides ceryl alcohol, sitosterol and sito sterol D-glucoside. These compounds were characterized on the basis of spectroscopic and chemical methods.
