Mechanism of action: L- Menthol a naturally occurring anticancer monoterpene

Uzma Faridi.

Abstract
L- Menthol is abundantly present monoterpene in nature and is effective against many diseases like microbial infection, inflammation or even in cancer. Many in-vitro anticancer/cytoxocity studies confirm its anticancer potential. Interestingly L-menthol is among the few molecules which show activity against multiple targets especially tubulin polymerization like taxol, topoisomerase inhibition like Camptothecin. Other targets are proteins of cell cycle like cyclin/CDK, P21, P53 or P57, WNT pathway proteins like c-myc, cyclin D1, Ca+2 ion channels, and apoptosis. Although it is activity on in-vivo models is yet to be confirmed. Toxicity of L- menthol on animals is very low. All the studies till now showing that L-menthol can be a very good candidate in anticancer drug discovery as it a works on multiple targets, abundantly available and has very less toxicity towards normal cells.
