Abstract
Effect of a combination of some yogic postures, gestures, contractions and breathing exercises on body weight, basal metabolic rate ( B.M.R.), oxygen consumption, blood sugar, blood urea and serum cholesterol levels were studied in healthy medical students. The volunteers had to undergo yogic practice one and half hour daily for three months. The metabolic and biochemical assessments were made before and at the end of every month for three months. Practice of Yoga produced a time dependent increase in bodyweight and decrease in B.M.R. as well as oxygen consumption. Yogic exercises also consistently decreased blood sugar, blood urea and serum cholesterol concentrations. The findings observed in the present study indicate that regular practice of yogic exercises stimulates body anabolism and decreases catabolism. In addition, Yoga also produces hypoglycaernic and hypocholesterolaemic effects.
